Which Spill Kit for Hazardous or Unknown Liquids?
A Chemical spill kit is your best option. These kits can be used much the same as a general purpose kit and have the added advantage of being able to better cope with harsh chemicals such as acids and alkalis. Highly visible yellow absorbents are also great for alerting others of a potential workplace hazard. If you’re ever unsure about what type of liquid has been spilled, it’s best practice to use a Chemical Spill Kit. Learn more about chemical spill kits in our article If in Doubt, Lay Yellow Out.

How many Spill Kits do I need?
Always consider the size of your largest likely spill. If your largest liquid container is a 205L oil drum, you should have at least one 240 litre spill kit. If liquid spill risks are hydrocarbons only, or are likely to occur outdoors, an Oil & Fuel Spill Kit is recommended. Alternatively, if you also need to clean up other liquid spills and are looking to purchase one type of spill kit, a Chemical Spill Kit will provide the best protection for a variety of scenarios. It’s also worthwhile considering bunded storage for your liquids. These help to act as a secondary containment solution in the event of a containment failure. This makes clean up easier and can help to satisfy your environmental compliance obligations.
