Oil & Fuel Spills in Rain
Whether you’re a road safety contractor or an emergency crew dealing with traffic accidents, Spill response is challenging at the best of times, and that’s before you introduce wet weather. Oil and fuel travels up to 100 times faster on wet roads, posing further safety threats to other motorists and the environment. Two traditional solutions include polypropylene and granular absorbents, which we will cover below.
Traditional polypropylene oil and fuel absorbents do a good job of absorbing hydrocarbons, but if used outdoors in heavy rain, water can bead on the surface and affect absorption. There’s also an added risk of standing water when these absorbents are used on sloping road surfaces as water cannot filter through.
Granular absorbents are suitable for roads because they can fit into uneven surfaces. Their effectiveness in wet weather depends on the type of granules used. Some granules such as EnviroPeat are hydrophobic, and will absorb hydrocarbons only. Granules such as Liquasweep X900 will absorb all liquid types, making them less effective for use in rainy conditions.
A third innovative option and our focus for this article is Spilltration® Husky. It’s an absorbent material with some unique properties. It has the ability to trap hydrocarbons such as oils and fuels whilst allowing water to flow through the material.
Spilltration® Husky is also made from 100% recycled materials and features no additives. It is also reusable and UV resistant.
Here’s how it works:
Husky Do’s:
- Use to soak up oil and fuel
- Use in wet weather conditions
- Wring out and reuse as required
Husky Don’ts:
- Don’t use indoors to absorb non-hydrocarbon spills
- Don’t use to soak up oil spills on water – Husky absorbents are not hydrophobic
Spilltration® Husky is conveniently available in several sizes to suit different applications. For more information about Spilltration or to discuss which absorbent solution will best suit your requirements, contact us on 1300 991 180 or email [email protected].
- Husky Oil Filter Absorbent Pads 400 x 400mm (Pack of 5)
Spilltration absorbents are the only absorbent material available designed to absorb oils and fuels in outdoor wet environments such as high rainfall and water run-off. They are engineered to allow clean rainwater to filter through while absorbing and containing oil-based leaks and drips such as fuels, lubricant, solvent and transmission fluid spills.
The ultra-thick absorbent mat is made from durable, recycled post-industrial waste. This, along with the ability to reuse multiple times, makes them an environmentally sustainable option which reduce your disposal costs.
The Spilltration absorbents come supplied vacuum-packed to fit in areas up to 80% smaller than traditional polypropylene absorbents.
- Husky Oil Filter Absorbent Rug – 810 x 1220mm
