Safe Storage: Removing Danger

Chemicals are widely used across many industries and are essential for many processes including production, maintenance and cleaning. For example, in manufacturing many of our clients use chemicals for the treatment of surfaces, coatings and adhesives. Similarly in mining, chemicals are used for mineral extraction and processing. Whilst chemicals offer immense productivity benefits, it is crucial to ensure they are handled and stored safely to prevent harmful accidents. In this article we’re exploring the important role that storage cabinets and bunding can play in the storage of hazardous substances.

Why use hazardous storage cabinets?

Hazardous storage cabinets are specially designed to safely store and segregate dangerous goods. Australian standard compliant cabinets offer durable construction and can withstand the hazards posed by the stored goods. Cabinets include features including lockable doors, adjustable shelves, and adequate ventilation for optimal storage conditions. By utilising hazardous storage cabinets, the risks associated with storing flammable, corrosive, toxic, or reactive substances are significantly reduced.

Can I store different chemical classes together?

Sometimes – but in most cases, no. Segregating specific classes of dangerous goods is essential for their safe storage. Generally, different classes have distinct properties and require specific storage conditions. Segregation prevents incompatible substances from coming into contact with each other, reducing the likelihood of chemical reactions, spills, or fires.

The best way to reduce these risks is to ensure that storage areas are clearly labelled, with goods stored based on the differed classes of dangerous goods. Download a copy of our chemical segregation chart to help you determine which types of chemicals are compatible and which should be isolated and kept apart. Workers should be well trained and understand risks posed by various chemical classes onsite. It’s important to always consult the SDS before handling or storing any chemical.

The role of bunding in safe storage

Bunding also plays a crucial role in preventing spills from causing harm to people, property, and the environment. Bunding is a secondary containment system, which can capture a spill or leak, which can prevent it from spreading further. The use of bunding helps to minimise the risk of contamination, allowing easier clean up, protecting people and the surrounding environment.

If your organisation stores large volumes of liquids it’s important to have some form of bunding – particularly where drains are present, or if chemical storage areas are in close proximity to bodies of water. Popular types of bunding include:

Bunded spill pallets are specialised platforms which feature built-in containment walls to capture spills from containers such as liquid drums or intermediate bulk containers. They are compact, portable and relocatable via forklift.

Portable bunding refers to flexible or collapsible bunding solutions that can be quickly deployed or relocated as required. These are ideal for temporary storage or instances where extra mobility is required. Portable bunds can be set up to contain items such as equipment, vehicles and storage tanks to prevent the spread of spills.

Floor bunding is a popular drive over solution for large storage areas such as warehouses, workshops and laboratories. Floor bunding is available in various materials to suit various applications and traffic requirements.

Another type of bunding worth mentioning is a bund wall. These are large-scale containment structures which are usually made from concrete or steel, and are commonly found in bulk storage facilities to contain leaks or spills within the designated space.

Stratex is the hazardous storage specialist, and we supply a wide range of storage cabinets and bunding to improve environmental outcomes. We also provide free onsite consultations, taking the time to understand how work areas are used, what types of chemicals stored and any traffic requirements. Our experienced team can help to identify potential risks and develop tailored strategies to improve safety in your organisation. Contact us today to schedule your free consultation.

  • EnviroPad Spill Mat – M10 (Medium) 90 x 69cm

The EnviroPad is a revolutionary spill pad that captures and solidifies hydrocarbon spills including oils, fuels and hydraulic fluids.
