Fuel Storage & Spill Control

Petrol and diesel fuels are a common part of everyday life – we use them to fill our vehicles and lawnmowers. In most home environments, they can be used and stored safely. However in workplace settings where large volumes are stored, it’s important to take additional safety precautions. In this article we’ll be looking at various ways to store fuel, and what to use in the event of a spill.

Which Storage Cabinet for Petrol and Diesel?

Both petrol and diesel are defined as combustible liquids by Australian Standard AS1940-2017. While they are similar in nature, a key difference is their flashpoint. A flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which the liquid vapours will ignite when close to an ignition source. As temperatures increase they emit more vapours, and once there is sufficient vapour to ignite, it means the flash point has been reached. Petrol has a flash point of -43ºC, which makes it extremely volatile. By comparison, diesel is more stable with a flashpoint between 52ºC and 96ºC. Both petrol and diesel are classified as class 3 flammable liquids according to the Australian Dangerous Goods Code. They can be stored safely in Class 3 flammable liquids storage cabinets as shown below.

When to Upgrade to a Bunded Fuel Cube?

When your fuel storage requirements exceed the capacity of most storage cabinets, it’s time to upgrade to a bunded fuel cube. Bunded fuel cubes are tanks designed for mobile or stationary fuel storage. In our view, the key benefits of switching to a cube are reducing the number of fuel containers and the potential environmental and safety risks from manual filling. Fuel cubes are ideal in extreme environments and feature internal baffles for safer transportation. Stratex bunded fuel cubes are available in capacities ranging from 200 to 4500 litres. Our most popular sizes listed below.

  • Bunded Fuel Cube 200L (Diesel Only)

Is a Bunded Fuel Trailer Worth it?

If you need to cover vast distances, or if fuel availability is scarce, our answer is yes. A fuel trailer is the safest way to transport volumes of fuel. Our trailers feature internal baffles to minimise sloshing and improve weight distribution when in motion. Most fuel tanks are bunded to prevent fuel escaping if the container becomes compromised.

Fuel trailers are a popular portable solution for refuelling on remote and rural mining and construction sites throughout Australia. They are common for transporting diesel and come fitted with necessary hoses and fittings. Stratex offers bunded fuel trailers with different capacities and axle configurations, with custom specifications available by request.

Which Spill Kit to Use for Petrol or Diesel?

An Oil and Fuel Spill Kit is our recommendation to clean up Petrol, diesel, aviation or liquid petroleum gas LPG spills. Absorbents contained in these spill kits absorb hydrocarbons including most fuels, oils, solvents and hydraulic fluids. These spill kits feature absorbent socks, pads and granules to contain and absorb fuel spills on sealed and unsealed surfaces. These components have the added benefit of being hydrophobic, meaning they will repel and float on water.

For refuelling that occurs near environmentally sensitive areas or in close proximity to drains, consider additional precautions such as an EnviroPad. The EnviroPad is a spill mat which captures refuelling leaks and drips. It uses smart polymer technology to absorb and solidify hydrocarbons, preventing in further leaching and potential environmental impacts. Learn more about the EnviroPad here.

  • EnviroPad Spill Mat – M10 (Medium) 90 x 69cm

The EnviroPad is a revolutionary spill pad that captures and solidifies hydrocarbon spills including oils, fuels and hydraulic fluids. By using smart polymer technology, the EnviroPad turns these liquids into solid rubber, preventing any contaminants from leaking or leaching into the environment – even under pressure.

The EnviroPad is not affected by heavy rain or water, reducing contaminated waste disposal costs. It is safe to use outdoors in all weather conditions, and can be carried or stored upright after use. Its non-leaching characteristics mean that the EnviroPad can be safely disposed of landfill (subject to local and state regulations).

    • Unique smart polymer spill pad
    • Solidifies oil and fuel so it can’t leak out
    • No pools of oily rainwater
    • No risk of overflowing
    • Doesn’t need sidewalls or a liner
    • Can be safely used outdoors and jet washed
    • Just as effective with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)
    • Instructions printed on the top
    • Absorbs up to 10.5L of oil

  • 120L Wheeled Bin Standard Spill Kit – Oil & Fuel

The Standard Range of Spill Kits are designed for indoor and outdoor spills on both sealed and unsealed surfaces. These can include sealed surfaces such as asphalt, concrete or metal, and also unsealed surfaces such as dirt or gravel.
